Mossbar Quarter Horses was founded in 1965 by Carl and Kathy Moss. Growing up and starting out in Dixon, Montana Carl based his horse program off of what he wanted in a horse. He always stressed quality, athletic ability, disposition, conformation, straight legs, and good looks. He once said "You can teach a horse to work a cow but you can't teach him to run." As such Mossbar horses carry plenty of running blood in their veins and have excelled as ranch, roping, and rodeo horses. It was important to Carl that Mossbar horses are "good doers". Carl has owned horses such as Pacific Jet, son of Jet Deck, Majestic Dawn, son of Sugar Bars, Cats B Bar, son of Birthday Bar a son of Three Bars. Sugar Bars and Three Bars have both played an influential role in the Mossbar breeding program. Santiago Sugar carried all of the qualities looked for by Carl with the addition of old school cow blood through his paternal grandsire Colonel Freckles. Santiago Sugar was added to the Mossbar program as a weanling. Carl Moss passed away on January 20, 2022 at the age of 74. Of his 74 years he spent 57 married to his sweetheart Kathy Moss and building Mossbar Quarter Horses. Kathy, their ten children, thirty six grandchildren and their soon to be 25 great grandchildren continue enjoying the horses that Grandpa Carl raised and was passionate about. If you are lucky enough to swing a leg over a horse carrying the "U lazy U" brand on their right shoulder you will be riding a horse who carries in his blood and his stride a life time vision. Carl was inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2018 and he felt that his faith, family, and horses are what led him to achieve that honor. Carl and Kathy's daughter Keela and her husband Rick Seemann began standing Santiago Sugar in Colville, Washington in 2019 to carry on the Mossbar legacy. You will see their brand "lazy U, U" the mirror image of Carl's brand, carried on the right shoulder of the horses that continue to shape and build Mossbar Quarter Horses.
